Woody Allen’s 50th film is now out in the US. Called Coup de Chance, it’s a thriller set in Paris, that is his first feature that doesn’t feature English at all.
Coup de Chance is the biggest US release of an Allen film in several years. The film opens with a limited release in certain cities – which is fairly common for Allen and other arthouse films. You can find the details here.
The film is a thriller set in Paris. It has been released in Europe and several other countries for several months. It has been greeted with some of Allen’s best reviews. Here is the official synopsis:
Fanny (Lou de Laâge) and Jean (Melvil Poupaud) look like the ideal married couple – they’re both professionally accomplished, they live in a gorgeous apartment in an exclusive neighborhood of Paris, and they seem to be in love just as much as they were when they first met. But when Fanny accidentally bumps into Alain (Niels Schneider), a former high school classmate, she’s swept off her feet. They soon see each other again and get closer and closer…
COUP DE CHANCE is about the important role chance and luck play in our lives.
You can find the screening times over at the special Coup de Chance site.
The last Allen film to get a proper, multi-city US opening was Wonder Wheel in 2017. A Rainy Day In New York got a very limited opening during COVID, and Rifkin’s Festival went straight to digital. Although a digital release is already set for 12 April.

I’ll be seeing it this week & my DVD is already ordered! Any word on when your podcast returns?
we saw it over the weekend… theater was packed though it was a small one seating maybe 50… it was very nice… great cast… nice little redirection and quirks… enjoyed it a lot. the lead had a total Scarlett Johansson vibe. we looked up the cast and they are all very accomplished in france.
