Bullets Over Broadway Nominated For Six Tony Awards

The nominations for the 68th Tony Awards have been announced, and the Bullets Over Broadway musical has scored six nominations. The announcement was made Tuesday morning in New York.

The six ‘Bullets Over Broadway‘ nominations are:

Best Book Of A Musical – Woody Allen.

This is Allen’s first ever nomination for a Tony. He’s up against Chad Beguelin (‘Aladdin‘), Douglas McGrath (‘Beautiful: The Carole King Story‘) and Robert L Freedman (‘A Gentleman’s Guide To Love And Murder‘).

(McGrath, of course, co-wrote the film of Bullets Over Broadway with Woody Allen, and as an actor appeared in Celebrity, Small Time Crooks and Hollywood Ending)

Best Choreography – Susan Stroman

Stroman has won this category four times in the past – for ‘Crazy For You‘, ‘Show Boat’, ‘Contact‘ and ‘The Producers‘. She is up against Warren Carlyle (‘After Midnight‘), Steven Hoggett & Kelly Devine (‘Rocky’) and Casey Nicholaw (‘Aladdin’).

Best Orchestrations – Doug Besterman

Besterman has won this category three times in the past, for ‘Fosse‘, ‘The Producers‘ and ‘Thoroughly Modern Millie‘. He is up against Jason Robert Brown (‘Bridges Over Madison County‘), Steve Sidwell (‘Beautiful: The Carole King Story‘) and Jonathan Tunick (‘A Gentleman’s Guide To Love And Murder‘).

Best Scenic Design Of A Musical – Santo Loquasto

Loquasto has worked on 23 Woody Allen films – every US set film since Radio days in 1987. He’s won in this category before, for ‘Cafe Crown‘.He is up against Christopher Barreca (‘Rocky‘), Julian Crouch (‘Hedwig and the Angry Inch‘) and Alexander Dodge (‘A Gentleman’s Guide To Love And Murder‘).

Best Costume Design Of A Musical – William Ivey Long

Long has won this award six times – for ‘Nine‘, ‘Crazy For You‘, ‘The Producers‘, ‘Hairspray‘ , ‘Grey Gardens‘ and ‘Rodgers And Hammerstein’s Cinderella‘. He is up against Linda Cho (‘A Gentleman’s Guide To Love And Murder‘), Arianne Philips (‘Hedwig and the Angry Inch‘) and Isabel Toledo (‘After Midnight‘).

Best Performance By A Featured Actor In A Musical – Nick Cordero

This is Cordero’s first Tony nomination. Cordero plays the role of Cheech, portrayed by Chazz Palminteri in the film. Palminteri was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance. He is up against Danny Burstein (‘Cabaret‘), James Monroe Iglehart (‘Aladdin‘) and Jarod Spector (‘Beautiful: The Carole King Story‘).

Bullets...’ did miss out on some major nominations, in particular Best Musical.
