The final – and most significant – role of the Bullets Over Broadway Musical has been cast. Broadway star Marin Mazzie has beaten out several competitors for the coveted role. New York Times has the story.
Mazzie has won the role of Helen Sinclair, the temperamental diva from Allen’s 1994 film version. Diane Wiest played Sinclair in the film, winning an Academy Award for Best Actress.
Mazzie doesn’t have many screen credits, but she has a long career in Broadway. She has been nominated for multiple Tony Awards, including for her role in ‘Kiss Me Kate‘, and originating the role of Clara in Stephen Sondheim‘s ‘Passion‘.
As reported, Mazzie beat out several bigger stars to get the role. It is clear that she was Allen’s favourite during workshops and it looks like he got his way. She is not the big marquee name, but that’s not how Allen works. We wait and see what impact these casting decisions will have on the show.
With the show opening in four months, we are definitely getting down to the wire. Tickets are on sale now for a 11th March 2014 premiere.
A video was posted on the Bullets Over Broadway’s Facebook to coincide with the announcement.
